Poetry – for the moments that resonate

Here are a few of my own poems inspired by the things around me and the thoughts, feelings and events of life.

Winter Act 2: The Jewelled Dual is a poem inspired by two pheasants I saw one winter in our driveway. There was a wary circling, a building up and then a quick and ferocious battle that appeared to end rather abruptly with no discernible winner. Read the Jewelled Dual by clicking here

The Starling Starlings are immense fun to watch, both in our gardens and in their amazing sky-filling murmurations. You can read The Starling and a few words about how this poem came into being, here

Autumn Act One: How Pleasant the Pheasant is a poem inspired by some of the wonderful and colourful scenes that are played out in the wild as the seasons change to autumn. Living in rural Suffolk I find that there is always a show going on somewhere. You can read Autumn Act One: How Pleasant the Pheasant here

Defending the Borders is a poem for all gardeners at the time of year when you begin to see things grow back and before you know it there is a riot of growth happening all around you that needs to be taken in hand. I wrote this after moving in to a new house with a large garden that had been left to run wild for some time. You can read Defending the Borders here

The Burial Plot was inspired from the area in which I live, although it is a debate that spans the country. When we were renovating I was travelling between our old and new house each day and would pass signs which read, ‘Bury not Blight.’ These referred to the great pylons that often dominate our landscapes now and the proposed plans for them to be buried underground. I am torn as to my feelings about this subject; on the one hand I fully understand how the great metal structures certainly can interrupt the views we have of our land, but on the other, I worry about the amount we dig up the very ground on which we live to either take out natural resources or put in unnatural ones. Shadows is a poem I wrote to reflect the pictures my husband and I often take on our holidays or days out at various beaches. Our images stretch and distort as shadows on the ground. You can read Shadows here

Words is a poem or piece of spoken word about those moments when you just can’t find the right words to say. Or, the times when you just can’t get the words you want to come out and how sometimes, someone else, with their song or poem has been able to succinctly say everything you wish that you could.
